There are more than one million people in the world today that are affected by Multiple Sclerosis. Each day more people discover that they have this disease and need to know more about what their future looks like and how they can lead an active lifestyle. It is completely normal to be scared when you are first diagnosed.
Many people have thought this diagnosis was a death sentence but have come to find out that their lives were far from over. If we are to understand and bring acceptance to the world community for people afflicted with Multiple Sclerosis, we must first be educated ourselves on what the disease actually is and how it affects our daily lives. Perhaps this article can help shed light and bring some knowledge on a disease that has largely remained in the dark for so many years.
What is Multiple Sclerosis?
Multiple Sclerosis, or MS, is a condition in which the myelin in the body is attacked by the body’s own white blood cells and antibodies. The myelin acts like a coat around the nerve. Without the myelin, the nerve is exposed and damage begins to occur to the sheath surrounding the nerve and finally the nerve itself is damaged.
With damage comes scarring. The scarring prevents or slows down the body’s nerve signals that control several functions such as strength, sensation, and vision and muscle coordination.
Is there a cure for MS?
The sad reality is that at this present time there is no cure for Multiple Sclerosis. There are medications that can slow down the progression of the disease but even the use of these medicines cannot always stop the disease enough in some patients. For those with extensive nerve damage there is nothing doctors can do to repair the damage.
Medical science, though very advanced when compared to two hundred years ago, still has boundaries that it has not been able to break. Hopefully with enough education and funding there will be a cure and people can finally be free from MS.
Are there any risk factors?
Unfortunately science and the medical community still does not know enough about Multiple Sclerosis to know how and why some people get the disease and why some do not. They do not know what causes a healthy person’s immune system to begin attacking their own body. They think that genetics does play a role but are not sure how big of a role it does play and what factors contribute to this genetic legacy or how, if at all, it will be passed down.
How can I manage my life with MS?
You will manage it the very same way you did before you found out you had Multiple Sclerosis. It does not mean the end of your life. Yes, you may have to make some adjustments but you can get through them.
If you have difficulty walking because of partial paralysis you can use a wheelchair or a cane. The doctors and healthcare community can help you overcome the disabilities associated with this disease. You need to stop it, not let it stop you.
How can I help a loved one cope with MS?
The very first thing you can do is to become educated. The more you know about MS the more you can help your loved one cope with their diagnosis. It is important for you to allow them all the space they need in order to come to terms with this. It is a hard thing to hear from a doctor.
Far too much misinformation was given in the past. People did not understand how they could have MS and still have a normal life. You can be there to support them, listen to them cry and help them back to their feet.

When most people think of multiple sclerosis, they think of a disease that causes symptoms of weakness and motor problems – not pain. However, the vast majority of sufferers report various degrees of multiple sclerosis pain.
The National Multiple Sclerosis Society reports that almost half of all people with MS are troubled by chronic pain. In this article, we’ll examine medicines and techniques that people with multiple sclerosis can use to ease their discomfort.
MS pain can affect several areas of the body at a time and get worse or better for no apparent reason. Because MS attacks the body’s central nervous system, messages from the brain can become skewed.
With MS, the nerves are too active and send pain signals without reason. There are different types of MS pain. Acute MS pain can come on suddenly and disappear just as quickly. While intense, these attacks are usually brief in duration.
Trigeminal neuralgia or “tic doloureux” is a stabbing pain in the face that can be brought on by facial movements like chewing, yawning, sneezing, or washing your face. People with MS typically confuse it with dental pain.
Most people can get sudden attacks of pain that can be triggered by touch, chewing, or even brushing the teeth. Lhermitte’s sign is a brief, stabbing, electric-shock-like sensation that runs from the back of the head down the spine, brought on by bending the neck forward.
Some MS pain can be chronic. Spasticity can lead to muscle cramps, tight and aching joints, and back or musculoskeletal pain. These chronic pain syndromes can often be relieved by anti-inflammatory drugs, massage and physical therapy.
For the most part, however, MS pain can’t be effectively treated with aspirin, ibuprofen, or other common over the counter pain reliever medications or treatments. In many cases, the treatment of choice is one of a range of anticonvulsant medications, such as Neurontin and Tegretol.
The side effects of these drugs can also include low blood pressure, possible seizures and dry mouth. They can also cause some weight gain.
Some patients, however, still haven’t found the right drug and the right dosage to control their multiple sclerosis pain. Scientists involved in MS research are currently examining the possibility of using Botox as a painkiller. The anti-wrinkle injections have shown promise in helping to control some types of MS pain by temporarily paralyzing a nerve or muscle.
This method has already been used by some MS clinics to manage spasticity and bladder problems. The biggest drawback is that Botox can only be injected into a limited area.
Finding a treatment for multiple sclerosis related pain can involve some trial and error. Patients should remember that they must be active in the process. If patients follow a proper diet, exercise regularly and monitor their symptoms, then doctors can prescribe a treatment regimen that will relieve the multiple sclerosis pain and help them to live a normal life.

Many people may know a little bit about multiple sclerosis (MS) but it’s surprising how even those who have the disease or know someone very close to them with it have a misunderstanding about what it is, what it is not, and how to deal with the symptoms of the condition. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society is an organization dedicated to informing patients and family members about this disease and usually has some of the most up to date information available, much of which is very surprising even to its patients.

For one thing, multiple sclerosis is a disease that attacks the central nervous system. This system consists of the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. This is different from muscular dystrophy, which is a group of diseases that actually attack the muscles themselves. In MS sufferers, their muscles are fine but the nerves cannot signal them to move and function properly. In muscular dystrophy, the nerves are fine but the muscles cannot function as they should. While the patients of both may have similar symptoms they are actually two very different diseases.

Many people assume that those with multiple sclerosis will die at a young age but this just isn’t true at all. Most patients with this condition have a normal life expectancy. It’s also thought that it is an inherent disease; while the gene responsible for the condition can be found in families it is not directly inherent. Most with MS will see it skip a generation or two, or will find that there are patients in their extended family (aunts and uncles, distant cousins, etc.) rather than having the gene passed on from parent to child.

It’s interesting also that most persons with multiple sclerosis do not become severely disabled. They may have certain problems or limitations that they will need to accommodate; many have issues with coordination and balance, or have trouble walking that means assistance with a cane, walker, or occasional wheelchair, but the vast majority of MS patients are able to have careers and families and function normally with only minor inconveniences. Typically just knowing that you have the disease or condition will help tremendously in being able to make accommodations around the house and place of employment; many patients with multiple sclerosis simply ask to be relocated to a desk or work station nearer the restroom so they have less distance to walk; they may request to be able to phone in to conferences and meetings rather than travel or even walk to the conference room, and of course they become quite adept at email and instant messaging so they don’t need to get to a coworker’s desk either! These minor accommodations are usually happily provided by an employer.

Those with MS usually experience quite a different set of symptoms than another patient or sufferer with MS. It’s important to be in contact with your doctor as well because there are always new medications and treatment options being developed for MS that may not be able to cure the disease outright but that can make the symptoms that much more bearable.

A New Treatment Theory

Dr. Paul Goldberg has advanced the theory that a plentiful year round supply of the sun’s ultraviolet rays, which trigger the production of vitamin D in human skin, is the reason why multiple sclerosis is almost non-existent in tropical regions. He argues that in temperate climates the disease strikes those who inherit an unfulfilled need for the high levels of vitamin D that the sun bestows on tropical humans. If his theory proves correct then multiple sclerosis should be easy to prevent but unfortunately not cure. Multiple Sclerosis is primarily in adults between the ages of 20 and 40.

Always consult your doctor before using this information.

This Article is nutritional in nature and is not to be construed as medical advice.

What is multiple sclerosis? It is a chronic, inflammatory disease that affects the central nervous system. Although the often debilitating symptoms of the disease are clear, scientists have yet to nail down a cause. Some researchers believe that MS is triggered by the body’s own immune system, while others attribute it to viruses such as Epstein-Barr.
Other scientists believe that its virtual absence from tropical countries points to a deficiency of vitamin D during childhood. With so many theories about multiple sclerosis, it’s difficult for patients to know what to believe. In this article, we’ll examine the known facts about the disease and MS treatment options.
The disease multiple sclerosis affects the brain and spinal cord by attacking the protective myelin covering of the central nervous system. This causes inflammation and often destroys the myelin in patches.
MS has well defined attacks followed by complete or partial recovery. The severity of MS, progression and specific symptoms cannot be predicted at the time of diagnosis.
Multiple sclerosis can occur at any age, and is three times more likely to occur in women than in men, and is seen most commonly in people of northern European background. There is also some evidence to suggest that MS is triggered by a common virus, and that genetics makes some people more susceptible to the disease.
Multiple sclerosis symptoms vary greatly from person to person and can include vision disturbances, extreme fatigue, loss of balance, problems with coordination, stiffness of muscles, speech problems, bladder and bowel problems, short-term memory problems, and even partial or complete paralysis.
One thing that’s important to remember about multiple sclerosis is that patients will not necessarily experience all the symptoms, and the symptoms improve during periods of remission. The main clinical measure of disability progression and severity of the symptoms is the Expanded Disability Status Scale or EDSS.
The one thing that can be said definitively about multiple sclerosis is that there is not yet a cure. While the disease does induce painful symptoms, it is not fatal. Researchers have developed a number of medications that effectively control some symptoms, so patients can continue to love a normal life. These medications do have reported side effects, but the search for better medications is ongoing.
MS treatment and medications have proven to be effective in controlling the symptoms, and there is hope for a cure. Researchers are trying to develop techniques to repair damaged myelin and nerve fibers. Scientists are also trying to understand why the immune system attacks the body’s myelin so that these attacks can be prevented.
Given enough time and funding, hopefully one day there will be a cure for multiple sclerosis. Until that time, continue to live as full a life as you can.

The main goal of any multiple sclerosis support group is to enhance the quality of life of MS patients and provide support to their families. Living with a diagnosis of MS can be a terrifying experience that leaves the patient feeling depressed and alone.
Multiple sclerosis support can help the patient come to terms with their illness and teach them life skills that will help them deal with their symptoms safely. In this article, we’ll tell you how these support groups can help you and your family.
Many national multiple sclerosis support organizations consist of volunteers and staff that provide information and support to health professionals, employers, institutions and students, in addition to providing support to patients. Besides providing support counseling to their primary clients, an MS support group can educate caregivers, friends and families about the disease. They can also refer patients to additional support services such as self-help groups, recreation and social programs for financial assistance.
Founded in 1946, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society is one of the most recognized supporters of MS research in the world. They also offer extensive services to people with MS, provide professional education programs and participate MS advocacy efforts. The Society is dedicated to achieving a world free of MS and work toward this goal with extensive research geared toward finding the cause and a cure for multiple sclerosis.
This MS support group also functions on a political level by lobbying various levels of government to encourage public policies supportive of the needs of people with multiple sclerosis. The Society provides assistance to over a million people every year through partnerships with the health care community, its home office and a fifty-state network of chapters. Across the country, over 460,000 volunteers participate in events, and support programs and services to help people with MS.
The biggest challenging facing any multiple sclerosis support group is raising the funds needed to provide adequate support services to the MS community. A portion of financial support is provided by government funding and corporate contributions, but organizations mainly depend on money raised through fundraising campaigns and donations. It can be a struggle, but the funds are desperately needed to provide programs that assist MS patients, fund critical research, and finance public awareness campaigns.
Being diagnosed with MS is never easy, but there is support in the community. Your doctor or health care worker can refer you to a multiple sclerosis support group in your area. You can also find multiple sclerosis news and information online.
If you or someone you love is dealing with MS, then these incredible organizations can provide emotional support and educate you about the disease. Learning all that you can about MS will help take the fear factor out of the experience.

Multiple sclerosis is a complex disease that attacks the body’s central nervous system. These can lead to a number of physical and neurological symptoms that can be debilitating and frightening to the patient. While there is not yet a cure, significant advances have been made in multiple sclerosis treatment. In this article, we’ll explore a variety of treatments and help you decide which is best for you.
Before you speak to your doctor about multiple sclerosis treatment, prepare a list of questions beforehand and take notes about the responses. For each drug option, find out how effective it is, how it is administered and how often, and what the potential side effects are. Because MS is a chronic disease, you will need to use the medication for a long time. You should be comfortable with any multiple sclerosis therapy that you choose.
Researchers believe that damage to the brain and spinal cord may be happening early in the development stage, before the symptoms of multiple sclerosis occur. That’s why it’s important to start treatment as soon as possible.
Research has shown that the progression of physical disability can be slowed if you start treatment early. Some patients choose injected therapies for relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis. Avonex is an intramuscular injection given once a week.
This form of MS treatment is used for patients in remission to slow the accumulation of physical disability and decrease the frequency attacks. Depression or feelings of sadness are a common side effect of Avonex.
Rebif is another injectable treatment that is administered three times a week and includes a naturally occurring human protein. It has the same effect as Avonex. Other similar injected treatments include Betaseron and Copaxone.
Infusion therapies for symptoms of MS may be an option for patients who are having an inadequate response to their current treatment or are having issues with side effects. These medications are administered directly into the bloodstream through a vein to help stop inflammation and prevent further damage.
Ask your doctor or nurse if infusion therapy may be right for you, as well what the latest infusion therapies are, and what the most important information is that you should know. In addition to medication, you may also want to consider making lifestyle changes. Diet, exercise and other changes can help you manage multiple sclerosis symptoms.
If you’ve been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, then you should talk to your doctor about which multiple sclerosis treatment is right for you. Some of the most common side effects of drug therapy include fever, chills, sweating, muscle aches and tiredness.
For many people, these symptoms lessen or go away over time. Talk to your doctor if these symptoms continue longer than the first few months of therapy, or if they are difficult to manage.

There are scientific advancements that look promising for preventing and even reversing Multiple Sclerosis. Multiple Sclerosis is one of the most common diseases of the central nervous system. MS is an inflammatory demyelinating condition. Myelin is a fatty material that insulates nerves, acting much like the covering of an electric wire and allowing the nerve to transmit its impulses rapidly. It is the speed and efficiency with which these impulses are conducted that permits smooth, rapid and co-ordinated movements to be performed with little conscious effort. In Multiple Sclerosis, the inflammatory response produces any number of symptoms including blurred vision, weakness, numbness, dizziness, tremors, slurred speech, bowel and bladder problems, sexual impotence in men and paralysis. MS usually occurs in people between the ages of twenty-five and forty, and twice as many women as men suffer from. MS may be the quietest epidemic in the country. It’s on the rise, but it garners few headlines. Recent figures released by the MS Society estimate the annual cost of MS in the US at $10 billion, higher than the cost of asthma (about $5 billion) and all infectious diseases (nearly $8 billion) despite a much higher incidence of those conditions. More than 500,000 Americans have MS and the United States and Canada have one of the highest national rates in the world. The myth of not knowing the cause or the cure for Multiple Sclerosis is repeated year after year, drummed into the collective mind of the public and those suffering from MS. Unfortunately the vast majority of those suffering from Multiple Sclerosis are doomed by the ignorance that is fostered by the medical/pharmaceutical system. In reality, extensive research reveals that proliferation of Multiple Sclerosis in society is a direct manifestation of our changed lifestyles. When people around the world experience similar problems, it’s not a random incident but a methodical process spreading across cultures and borders. Recently I read a report on how most of these problems could be cured after scientific experiments. Imagine the joy someone would feel being able to move about freely, and not having to depend on others to do basic things like walking, or going to the toilet on their own. This scientific program has helped many, and it gives everyone hope of a new beginning although at this stage it’s not sure whether it can cure it altogether. As this is a natural cure, can you imagine how much the drug companies are going to loose, and it’s so new your Doctor probably wouldn’t have heard about it. I have read many testimonials from people who call it a miracle cure, and they are looking towards Doctor Robert O Young as a God after his scientific breakthrough. The basis of his findings is that people’s diets and lifestyles in the Western world are so different from the way they were only 100 years ago. You see, our lifestyle choices have gotten us into this mess. We need to make the right choices to get us out. The fact is the exponential increase in Multiple Sclerosis is really the result of the way our lives have changed. The bad news is we are used to living a certain way now and it isn’t easy to change. The good news is that change is in our power and with it better health. Hence Multiple Sclerosis is NOT a life threatening condition. Everyday now more and more people are finding that they can actively reverse their Multiple Sclerosis .

Most often than not, before the actual diagnosis of multiple sclerosis, a person will experience inexplicable and apparently strange symptoms that is mysterious. The person will be mystified, disorientated and frequently frightened when numbness, weakness set in, in addition to other neurological symptoms. These symptoms will crop up haphazardly and then disappear just as you are getting used to it. The diagnosis gave them a reassurance that they are sane and their condition is genuine. To properly diagnose multiple sclerosis, your neurologist will look into your medical history as well as look at your physical symptoms. Be frank and upfront with the neurologist and list out all symptoms regardless of how miniscule it may be. As there is no one reliable test for multiple sclerosis, it is generally done by removing all possibilities and taking into account the symptoms experienced by the patient. But there is a set criterion before multiple sclerosis is confirmed as MRI, lumbar puncture and V.E.P though obligatory, are not enough to suggest multiple sclerosis. The criterion is that there are two separate central nervous systems that are affected; the symptoms have to take place within a month by the patient. They are then accompanied by a full neuro examination; after which by MRI and lumbar puncture too.Multiple sclerosis can give rise to conflicting emotions and depression is the worst. When certain segment of the brains or nervous systems is affected by multiple sclerosis, depression can occur. On the other hand, coping with multiple sclerosis can give rise to depression as the symptoms can affect your daily existence. When depression crops up, seek the counsel of the doctor and get prescription medications such as Prozac and Elavil, etc. to treat it. Besides the standard medicines, herbal cures can be effective too but again check with your doctor as herbal remedies might interfere with regular multiple sclerosis medications. Ways to manage multiple sclerosis is to put aside time to do what you enjoy, be it with family or close friends. Keeping to yourself will only make multiple sclerosis that much more tricky to manage. Get out and enjoy the bright sunlight as without it, depression can set in. Live a purposeful life as that will make life so much more relevant and a future to look forward to. Don’t let disability overcome you and let exercise be a part of your daily routine as exercise discharges endorphin which makes you feel better even though you may experience all the discomfort.

Multiple sclerosis is a form of autoimmune disease that often causes irreversible impairments at different levels of the nervous system. At present, multiple sclerosis can neither be prevented, nor completely cured. However, the existing treatments are used to slow down the progression of the disease, prolong the periods of remission, ease the symptomatic flare-ups and prevent the development of further complications. The main factor responsible for the development of multiple sclerosis is inappropriate activity of the immune system.
While the normal immune system produces antibodies that fight against antigens (foreign infectious agents), in the case of multiple sclerosis the immune system becomes dysfunctional and turns against healthy body cells. The compromised immune system can no longer distinguish between healthy, normal cells and antigens, triggering repeated attacks on the body’s nervous system and destroying the nervous cells’ protective cover called myelin. The destruction of myelin (protein that has a series of vital roles at the level of the nervous system) determines serious impairments of the central nervous system and peripheral nerve tissues.
Myelin surrounds the axons, (filaments that are responsible with the transmission of electric impulses among nerve cells) facilitating the transmission of information between nervous cells. When the myelin cover is destroyed, the signals transmitted at the level of the nervous system are disrupted, thus causing a series of neurological symptoms in patients confronted with this type of disease. Although in the past medical scientists believed that multiple sclerosis only involves the destruction of myelin, recent medical investigations have revealed the fact that the axons are also attacked by the dysfunctional immune system.
Axon destruction begins in the incipient stages of multiple sclerosis and it is considered to be the main reason for the irreversible character of the disease. The spontaneous periods of remission experienced by most patients with multiple sclerosis are believed to occur not as a result of temporary decreased autoimmune response, but as a result of accentuated remyelination (repairing of the myelin) at the level of the nerve cells. However, the benefic effects of remyelination are later surpassed by the undesired actions of the immune system in the periods of relapse. Intrigued by the process of spontaneous remyelination that occurs in the periods of remission, medical scientists are currently working to stimulate and enhance this process at the level of the nerve cells in patients with multiple sclerosis. Extra stimulation of the nervous systems’ production of myelin, corroborated with immunosuppressive treatments may provide an efficient cure in the near future.

In order to understand multiple sclerosis and how it can be treated you need to know a few basic facts about how the nervous system works when it’s not affected by the illness.

The central nervous system is a vital mechanism composed of the brain and the spine. Without it we couldn’t live and all the diseases that affect it are dangerous.

Throughout our body there are a lot of sensitive nerve endings. These nerves tell us if what we touch is cold or hot, soft or hard, by sending signals to the central nervous system, which processes them and turns them into the sensations we feel when we touch something or even when we see and hear something. The nerve endings are surrounded by a protective membrane called myelin.

Also, in our bodies you can find a lot of white blood cells and antibodies. These have the role of guarding the body against infections and foreign organisms that get inside it. Both the antibodies and white blood cells are controlled by the central nervous system. When it detects an infection it sends them attack the Holsteins bacteria that cause it.

Now that we’ve gone through these basic facts we can understand multiple sclerosis. When a person has multiple sclerosis the central nervous is confused and it sends the white blood cells and antibodies attack the myelin that protects the nerve endings. When these attacks occur the sense which uses the involved nerve endings gets affected.

Depending on what sense is attacked the symptoms vary widely from one person to another. If it’s the visual sense then temporary loss of vision can appear, or if it’s not a full loss of vision the blurry or doubled vision occurs.

The motor system can also be attacked and in this case loss of balance and coordination are experienced by the person in cause.

Sometimes those with multiple sclerosis also feel confused, experience mood swings, and have respiratory problems.

The cause of these attacks is unknown, no one can tell what makes the nervous system attack the nerve endings, but scientists are researching the reason and they hope to discover it soon.

There is no treatment that can cure multiple sclerosis, and in order to find a good treatment we need to discover the cause first. Until then the treatment can only try to stop or ameliorate the attacks. There are a few drugs that have been proven to help those suffering from multiple sclerosis but nothing that does something certain against it has been released. Let’s hope that research will bring good news in the near future.

You can search the Internet for more multiple sclerosis information and you can also find support groups created to help those that suffer from it and put them in touch with the latest breakthroughs in the domain.
